Asian Carriers Shopping At Paris Show

At the 2009 Paris Air Show, Airbus announced commitments for 127 new aircraft valued at USD 12.9 billion, with many of the most significant orders coming from carriers based in Asia and the Middle East.

The European aircraft manufacturer’s commitments included firm orders for 58 aircraft worth almost USD 6.4 billion, plus memoranda of understanding for a further 69 aircraft totaling USD 6.5 billion.

“Our customers are addressing both the long-term industry growth as well as the necessary replacement of older less efficient aircraft,” said John Leahy, chief operating officer customers at Airbus.

Airbus’ largest order came from Qatar Airways, which placed an order for 20 A320s and four A321 aircraft valued at USD 1.9 billion.

Low-cost carrier AirAsia’s long-haul affiliate, AirAsia X placed a firm order for 10 A350-900s while Vietnam Airlines ordered 16 A321s. Other Asian airlines buying at the show include two airlines from the Philippines: Cebu Pacific ordered five A320s, while newcomer Zest Air ordered one A320.

Asian carriers placing MOUs at the show included India’s Paramount Airways, which ordered 10 A321s and Vietnam Airlines, which ordered two A350-900s.
